Don’t Hate the Game, Hate the Player

TGS 2008 Highlights

OK well I have to admit I was a bit underwhelmed this year.
It wasn’t abysmal by any means but nothing really thrilled me. We got some nice and lengthy trailers but not many games stood out on there own…And frankly I love RPGs but I can only take so many new DS titles. And it begs the question as to why there are billions of new RPGs for the handheld but barely any on the Wii.

Either way I am going to post the trailers I liked most throughout the show. Enjoy!

  • Street Fighter IV – In my mind THE trailer of the show. Simply amazing and I need to grab this remix of Ryu’s theme!!
  • Resident Evil 5 – With already seen a lot from the game at E3 and GC but just seeing Albert Wesker makes it all worthwhile.
  • Muramasa: The Demon Blade – One of the great surprises of TGS. The game comes from the developers of Odin Sphere and bares a similar gameplay. Plus it simply looks gorgeous.
  • Bayonetta – Devil May Cry meets Otaku fan service….and why not! Warning though: this trailer was made by guys, for guys.
  • Halo 3: Recon – You know Bungie can put out a great trailer and this is another one.
  • Otomedius Gorgeous – Ok this may look like another fan service game (this is TGS after all) but this actually looks like a very decent Shoot’em Up.
  • Nikuni: The Another World – Aside from the translation straight from 1986 this game combines Level 5 and what seems to be Studio Ghibli so one has to pay attention!
  • Gensou Suikoden Tierkreis – Finally a trailer for the new Suikoden! The game looks a bit different but still awesome.
  • Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia – Same basic formula, still as enjoyable.
  • Tales of Hearts – If there is one thing the Tales of have mastered it’s kick ass trailers! and this is… a kick ass trailer. By the way if you wanted the crap CG version, well… too bad.

So ther you have it, what my brains has retained from this year’s TGS.

Team ICO to Unveil New Project at TGS

Since the release of the great Shadow of the Colossus, it has been announced, alongside a lone screenshot, by Famitsu in 2006 that the developers were working on a new project for the PS3. Since then though the project has been very silent and absent from this year’s E3 and GC.
In comes Shuhei Yoshida, head of Sony Worldwide Studio, who said that news should come “very soon”, presumably at TGS. Considering the quality of their former project, we shall eagerly await the announcement.

Screens for Still Life 2

Still Life was a successful adventure game developed by French studio Game Consulting. Its sequel, set to come out in November, will let you take the role of Victoria MacPherson, a detective who will go to Maine to check on a gruesome murder. You will also be able to control Journalist Paloma Hernandez.

Square Enix Bids for Tecmo

Even though they announced yesterday that Ninja Gaiden II had sold more than a million units Tecmo has been having troubles including lawsuits and resignations.
Today the RPG giant made a friendly $200M bid for the company to “rescue Tecmo” according to Yoichi Wada, president of Square Enix.

Rumor of the Week

The story comes from famous Japanese magazine Famitsu so it may hold some truth to it. Capcom is working on a Resident Evil 2 remake for the Wii that will include new creatures, new puzzles… The real story is that is will use the Resident Evil 4 engine!
If one thing’s for sure it’s that Capcom are masters at milking a franchise.

In gaming news today and as the E3 is drawing to a close we can finally start to sit back and relax (a little).

Guitar Hero: World Tour to Feature 3 Jimi Hendrix Songs

Activision stroke back with a vengeance today when they announced that the new Guitar Hero would feature not one, not two but three! songs from Jimi Hendrix. And not the least known ones either: Purple Haze, Foxy Lady and Little Wings. During the Microsoft conference at E3 2008 Harmonix announced that they would finally feature AC/DC in Rock Band 2, but they are only featuring one single song, Let There Be Rock, which gives Guitar Hero a sudden edge. The music game battle rages on!

Knights of the Old Republic Online is finally confirmed!

Portfolio.com got the story today form the horse’s mouth, Electronic Arts chief executive John Riccitiello, that EA is indeed working on the next KotOR project and that “yes”” it is an MMO. No release date or any other details have been announced yet but it seems the name might be “The Old Republic”.

Alan Wake to Be Shown at TGS

A Vista promotional page hints at the fact that the game will finally be shown at this year’s Tokyo Game Show. The game was strongly missing for E3 2008 and one can wonder about the validity of showing a PC game in Japan which is a very console oriented market.

Wii Sales Above 360 in the U.S. for the First Time

As of June, according to numbers released by the NDP, the Wii has sold 10.9 million units whereas the 360 has sold 10.4 million, officially beating the Microsoft console for the first time in the U.S. It is worth noting that worldwide the Wii has been above the 360 for some time selling close to 25 million units as opposed to 19 million for the latter.
