Don’t Hate the Game, Hate the Player

Visceral Games Employees Go to Activision

wii-dead-space1Visceral Games is on the fast track to become a very high-caliber studio. Having developed the great Dead Space and currently working on Dante’s Inferno (as well as Dead Space Extraction, an on-rail shooter for the Wii).

On the other hand Activision keeps growing and is apparently opening a new, yet unnamed, game studio which wouldn’t be too noteworthy but two major Visceral Games employees have announced they are leaving the company to go to this studio.

These two are Monchael Condrey, former COO of the company and Glen Schofield, former General Manager of the company and who was instrumental in making Dead Space.

Obvisouly some people at Visceral should be bummed but the real interesting question is why these two decided to switch boats like this.

Command & Conquer: Red Alert Free!

All you RTS players need to go this site and download the game. With Red Alert 3 coming out in October Electronic Arts has decided to make the first episode, released in 1996 (12 years ago!!!!), available for free.
Also anyone who preorders Red Alert 3 will get Red Alert 2 for free also.
Wow EA is turning into Santa Claus!

2 New PS3 Bundles for Europe

Sony will release two new PS3 bundles on October 29:

  • LittleBigPlanet, 80G console and a Dualshock 3 pad for €399
  • Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, 80G console and 2 Dualshock 3 pads for €449

360 Cheaper than Wii in Japan

Microsoft is going all out to help push its console into Japanese homes. The recent release of Tales of Vesperia helped but this can’t hurt either. The Redmond firm announced yesterday in Tokyo that it will cut the price of all its consoles fairly significantly starting September 11.
The biggest psychological drop comes for the Arcade version which drops to ¥19,800 ($183) which is ¥5,200 ($48) cheaper than the Wii.
Meanwhile the Elite will drop from ¥47,800 ($440) to ¥39,800 ($368) and the Pro model will go on sale for ¥29,800 ($275) which is ¥5,000 ($46) cheaper than its 20G predecessor.
Phew! Good deals all around.

Tenchu 4 Trailer and screens

I loved Tenchu for its ambiance and great soundtrack but the sequels were just OK. My main complaint being the lack of Japanese voices with English subtitles.
Anyway Tenchu 4 is coming out in Japan on the Wii on October 23 and today we get some yummy screens and a pretty nice trailer.
Please give me Japanese voices with subs! 😦

Guitar Hero Strikes Back

Last week Harmonix announced a bunch of albums for their Rock Band 2 and today Activision announced they signed a deal with many…MANY instrument manufacturers. here’s the list: Ampeg, Audio-Technica, EMG Pickups, Ernie Ball, Evans Drumheads, Guitar Center, Krank Amplification, Mackie, Marshall, Orange County Drum & Percussion, Pork Pie Percussion, Regal Tip, Sabian cymbals, Vox and Zildjian drumsticks. Wow!
They also announced today that World Tour will feature exclusively the new Smashing Pumpkins single named G.L.O.W. along with 1979 and The Everlasting Gaze in a pack. Today will be featured on the main Guitar Hero: World Tour disc.

Left 4 Dead Delayed

Valve has announced that they have postponed their release date to coincide with the anniversary of Half-Life. The game will come out on November 20 for PC and Xbox 360.
Doug Lombardi mentioned that the game could be ported to the PS3 since the console finally has a bigger number of them in home living rooms.

Harry Pitfall Jr. is Back

One of the most successful games from Activision for the Atari 2600 back then, Pitfall subsequently got some pretty good 2D sequels. The forays into 3D however, are not as fondly remembered.
In any case Pitfall: The Big Adventure has been announced on the Wii. Wait and see as they say.

EA & Take-Two Part…….

The two continue their mating dance but in a more private fashion. EA has stated that they are not going to publicly give any offer and that from now on everything will be negotiated privately once Take-Two is ready to sit down and make a deal. Which probably will not be until after GTA IV is released for the PC this fall.

This Week in RPGs

The numerous RPGs coming out this week will either have you jump for joy or cry at the amount of time you wish you had to play them….or, most likely, both.

  • Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice for the PS3 came out this Monday
  • Ys Book I & II on the Wii VC came out this Monday as well
  • Tales of Vesperia for the Xbox 360 comes out today
  • Infinite Undiscovery for the Xbox 360 is coming out Friday

Battleforge Delayed

Phenomic has changed the release date from End 2008 to a mere 2009. The game is a mix between an online strategy game and a card game, offering 40 maps for up to 12 players to battle on.

RetroBeats Session 11 Out!

This week I’m taking a look at some of the best original Disney games from the 16bits era, including Castle and World of Illusion, Quackshot, Mickey Mania and Maui Mallard in Cold Shadow

EA Is Expanding to Movies and TV

Considering the average quality of game adaptations to the screen this news can be scary but either way Electronic Arts has signed an agreement with the United Talent Agency to adapt some of its licenses to both the big and small screen. The First on the list appear to be The Sims, Mirror’s Edge and Army of Two.
Now’s a good time for a prayer.

Fallout 3 Will Be Released in Australia But Censored

After they said they would simply ban the game for it’s violence and language in the land down under, Bethesda went back to modify the game so that it could be released. Hence in its Australian version Fallout 3 will have some edited an deleted scenes and dialogues as well as the removal of all mentions of drugs.
Welcome to the 21st Century where democracies still act like the 3rd Reich in its hey-days. Long live the First Amendment.

Rock Band 2 Delayed?

It seems that while the game itself is still planned for the September 14 launch on the Xbox 360, the instruments will not be coming out until mid-October which coincides pretty well with the release of the game on PS3, PS2 and Wii. Doesn’t seem like a great exclusivity deal anymore.

Lian-Li Case for Xbox 360

Those of you who are into building their own computers are most likely familiar with Lian-Li, a very high quality case maker for PC. Well it seems they are releasing a special case for the Microsoft console. We all know the 360 is pretty noisy and gets fairly hot, so while this is a good idea I can’t help but feel that this is one of their weaker design and it simply looks too much like a PC tower.

Layoffs, Layoffs and More Layoffs

Since the Activision ‘streamlining’ a few weeks ago it seems that companies are firing people and canceling projects left and right. There was Midway a few days ago, NCSoft yesterday and now it’s Radical and High Noon, which are both owned by Activision Blizzard.
I know the economy isn’t at its best but this really doesn’t bode well for independent studios and original games.

Overlord Is Taking Over

Last year Overlord, a game I haven’t played but seems like a cross between Dungeon Keeper and Pikmin, was a surprise hit and Codemasters posted their best revenues ever. So it’s not too much of a leap to expect a sequel…BUT WAIT! They are actually planning to release 3 different games!
The PC, 360 and PS3 will be graced with a sequel: Overlord II while the Wii will have a prequel: Overlord: Dark Legend and the DS, a spin-off: Overlord Minions.
Pretty impressive and most certainly good news for fans of the original.

Overlord II:

Overlord: Dark Legend:

Overlord Minions:

SquareEnix Continues to Make Noise

They already made the biggest announcement of this year’s E3 revealing that Final Fantasy XIII would be released on the Xbox 360 but today they said something that is sure to annoy a lot of PS3 anew.
Apparently development of the game on the Microsoft console hasn’t even started since they haven’t received the dev kits yet. This should be good news for Sony fans no? Well not at all. While the Playstation will have a timed exclusivity in Japan, SquareEnix has announced that the game would be released on both consoles simultaneously in the U.S.. This means that even if the PS3 version is finished, users may have to wait months for the 360 version to come out before they can play the game.
As Will Smith used to say in Bad Boys : “I’d be….pissed!”

Call of Duty 6 Developed by Infinity Ward?

Activision is set to try and release a CoD game every year but in order to achieve this they need to have 2 studios working at the same time on different games. Currently Treyarch is working on Call of Duty 5: World at War so when Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick confirmed that another CoD title was planned for 2009 it set ablaze rumors that Infinity Ward, who developed the hit Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, was working on the title.
It hasn’t been confirmed yet but the studio said they were working on a new title for Activison so it looks like it is a strong possibility.

American McGee Is Back!!!!!!

After the amazing American McGee’s Alice, which is one of my all-time favorite games and holds one of my top 10 favorite soundtracks ever thanks to Chris Vrenna, and the very sad cancellation of American McGee’s Oz (please please please! make it!), the infamous guy went underground for a while. But now he is back with a gritty adaptation of the Brother’s Grimm tales.
The game will be released in 24 episodes available through Gametap and it’s all free so you have no excuse. The first episode was released last Thursday, the 31.

I haven’t tried the game yet but I intend to soon and will try to make a quick review.

Nintendo and the Rumor Mill

A bunch of rumors went through the web today after some fans saw RSS feeds mentioning the Wii 2 and Shigeru Miyamoto‘s ‘last’ project. The whole thing emerged from a Wall Street Journal talking about the company trying to keep its momentum.
In the end it turns out it’s just some very basic info that was overblown. Nintendo is indeed working on the Wii 2….since the Wii launched. Just as Sony has been working on the PS4 and Microsoft has been working on the Xbox 720.
As far as Miyamoto’s last project, they simply meant “the last project that he had in mind when they launched the Wii (almost 2 years ago). So he is now brainstorming hard to find new original and exciting (hopefuly more so then Wii Music) for our pleasure.

In the end, nothing to write home about.

Fable Pentalogy?

Peter Molyneux has always been one for juicy statements and today he struck again. In an interview with GameTrailers from last week he announced that he had plans for Fable III, IV and V and that it was all part of a big arc as would be evident once we play Fable II in October.
He also said he was contemplating doing a sports or driving game simply because these genres seem ‘locked in stone’ and he likes the challenging aspect of making something different.
One can only hope.

Now where is Syndicate?!

Activision, Brutal Legend Survives

Following yesterday’s eventful announcement Tim Schafer announced in a very straight to the point manner that “Brutal Legend is fine.”. Roger and out.

Delays, Delays and Delays!

  • Tom Clancy’s H.A.W.K. from 2008 to Early 2009
  • Battlefield Heroes from Summer 2008 to 2008
  • Tiberium from End 2008 to fiscal year 2010 (April 2009-March 2010)…Ouch!
  • Brothers in Arms Hell’s Highway from from August 2008 to September 2008, because apparently they want to coincide the release of the game with the anniversary of Operation Green Market (which the game depicts). If you have no clue what I’m talking about do yourself a favor and go rent Band of Brothers…NOW!

Star Trek Online Revealed!

Originally owned by Perpetual Entertainment, which closed its door in January, the MMO based on the world-famous TV show seemed to be facing tough times. Thankfully the license was acquired by Cryptic Studios (City of Heroes/Villains) and along with the confirmation came a bunch of lovely screenshots.

Vivendi Properties Shake-Up. Who Lives and Who Dies?

After Vivendi Games merged with Activision earlier this year and subsequently formed Activision Blizzard, there had to be some changes happening. Well these past days have been a roller coaster ride of announcements.
It was revealed that Activision would be publishing Vivendi’s best selling properties: Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon and Ice Age, along with the upcoming Prototype and another unknown project.
While there are other publishing arms that weren’t mention in the press conference to take care of the other franchises, it leaves several big games on the potential cutting board. Chief among these are Ghostbusters, Brutal Legend and Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena.
Today a Sierra representative announced that, while he couldn’t speak for other franchises, Ghostbusters is not canceled.

We can be sure to have more announcements in the coming days n the subject while Vivendi and Activision review their properties but I for one hope they do bring us Chronicles of Riddick because I’m very excited about it.

XBLA Dates, Dates and Dates

  • Geometry Wars 2: Retro Evolved out on July 30
  • Braid (which has me very excited) on August 6
  • Bionic Commando Rearmed on August 13
  • Galaga Legions on August 20
  • Castle Crashers on August 27

Wizard 101, MMO for Beginners

KingIsle, Texas-based developer, is currently working on an MMO aimed at a broad audience. The game lets you play a Wizard in training on his way to the Ravenwood school (of Witchcraft and Wizardry). you will be able to choose a pet to accompany on your quests, learn different schools of magic through various teachers. The fighting system seems to be card-based which can be found on the ground around the world and quests will involve puzzles and mini-games.

DC Comics Acquires Rights for Resident Evil and Devil May Cry Comics

The two major Capcom franchises will join previous acquisitions of Gears of War, Prototype and just recently Mirror’s Edge and will be published under the Wildstorm banner of DC Comics.

Telltale Games Loves Wallace & Gromit

The studio that successfully relaunched the Sam & Max franchise through episodic treatment is planning to do the same with the famous English characters. The game will be called Wallace & Gromit’s Grand Adventures and will be a classic point ‘n’ click adventure.

In gaming news today and as the E3 is drawing to a close we can finally start to sit back and relax (a little).

Guitar Hero: World Tour to Feature 3 Jimi Hendrix Songs

Activision stroke back with a vengeance today when they announced that the new Guitar Hero would feature not one, not two but three! songs from Jimi Hendrix. And not the least known ones either: Purple Haze, Foxy Lady and Little Wings. During the Microsoft conference at E3 2008 Harmonix announced that they would finally feature AC/DC in Rock Band 2, but they are only featuring one single song, Let There Be Rock, which gives Guitar Hero a sudden edge. The music game battle rages on!

Knights of the Old Republic Online is finally confirmed!

Portfolio.com got the story today form the horse’s mouth, Electronic Arts chief executive John Riccitiello, that EA is indeed working on the next KotOR project and that “yes”” it is an MMO. No release date or any other details have been announced yet but it seems the name might be “The Old Republic”.

Alan Wake to Be Shown at TGS

A Vista promotional page hints at the fact that the game will finally be shown at this year’s Tokyo Game Show. The game was strongly missing for E3 2008 and one can wonder about the validity of showing a PC game in Japan which is a very console oriented market.

Wii Sales Above 360 in the U.S. for the First Time

As of June, according to numbers released by the NDP, the Wii has sold 10.9 million units whereas the 360 has sold 10.4 million, officially beating the Microsoft console for the first time in the U.S. It is worth noting that worldwide the Wii has been above the 360 for some time selling close to 25 million units as opposed to 19 million for the latter.

id Software to Quit Activision for Electronic Arts

Right before E3 id Software (John Carmack and the guys who brought you Doom and Duke Nukem) announced that they would partner with EA to publish their upcoming title called RAGE ending their long time partnership with ActiVision. The deal however is only good, so far, for RAGE so we have yet to see what will happens once the game is released…..when it’s done.

Valkyria Chronicles coming on the PSP… Oops no Wait! I Meant the PS3

On the other front it seems Sony can’t do anything right this year. After a very solid presentation at E3 we might have thought they were back on track. Well apparently not. During their conference Sony unveiled Valkyria Chronicles as one of the major upcoming titles for their PSP. According to Kotaku, the problem is that is was never planned for the PSP but actually a PS3 title, they just messed up with the video. Sega quickly denied any rumor that the game was coming on the portable console. Ouch.
